ramblings of a sleepy person
just read this article on nyt about having to face life with a lethal gene; in this case, huntington's disease. as with most news articles featuring a disease, it follows the journey of a person who's afflicted. but what's different about this article is that this person hasn't exactly got the disease yet, but tested positive for it genetically, and everyone who has the gene will have the disease. (sidenote to zejia: i think there's a bit of confusion about the genetic basis here...something about penetrance and dominant/recessive they're not very clear about it :( and i'm too lazy to check out denise goh's notes haha) overall it's a story of a woman who faces up to her fate, that she will one day be afflicted and hence eventually lose the ability to think and to function as a person. and she's still learning to live with the knowledge. highly recommended read here :)be forewarned though, it's 6 pages long.
i think we should feel lucky that our main worries are not those of coping with a fatal disease, or fighting our way out of a hand-to-mouth existence...isn't it already a life of luxury when we can slack around, worry about inconsequential things like a bad haircut etc? or a bad internet connection in my case :/
ok sleepy ramblings over :) badminton today was really tiring, after 3 weeks of sitting on my bum and studying (plus all the falling asleep in between!)..hope i regain the stamina and ball sense which i seem to have lost :( and hope i don't lose it again while pros is here and i don't play!
and yanni you are back! time for a date REAL soon ^_^
